BURLINGTON, Mass.—The president and chief executive officer of the Lahey Clinic hospital in Burlington has announced that he will step down next January.

David Barrett said Thursday that at the request of the board of trustees, he will remain in a new strategic leadership role through September 2012 as part of a succession plan.

Barrett joined Lahey in September 1999 from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Barrett, a physician and professor of urology at Tufts University School of Medicine, over saw the expansion of Lahey facilities in Burlington and Peabody; formed clinical partnerships with other area hospitals to provide specialty care; and strengthened its academic ties to Tufts.

Operating revenue has increased more than 90 percent, to $833 million, since he took over.
