PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Stop & Shop supermarkets and five New England unions are continuing talks ahead of a Sunday vote on a new contract.
Brian Petronella, president of Connecticut's Local 317 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, told The Hour of Norwalk, Conn., on Friday that the sides "remain far apart."
In a statement, Stop & Shop spokeswoman Faith Weiner called the talks, held in Providence, "candid and substantive."
A strike could be called if workers in the five locals in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island reject the contract proposal in Sunday voting.
Negotiations have stalled over differences in what workers should be paid.![]()
