EVERETT, Mass.—A second person has died as a result of a two-alarm fire at an Everett home that authorities say was likely started by careless disposal of a cigarette.

A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital says 76-year-old Edward Power died early Thursday of injuries sustained in the blaze. His sister, 80-year-old Edna Power, was pronounced dead after the fire that was first reported at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Deputy Fire chief Bill Humphries says the brother and sister lived on the second floor of the home. Humphries say it appears the fire started when a first-floor tenant threw a cigarette butt out a window and ignited some debris on the porch.

Humphries says the building was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived.

The first-floor occupants escaped.
