LOWELL, Mass.—Lowell city councilors are considering a proposal to establish an immigration commission.
Councilors are scheduled Tuesday to vote on creating the new appointed commission that will be aimed at advocating on behalf of the city's immigrants and refugees.
City Manager Bernie Lynch said the commission would promote the social integration of immigrants and advise city council on immigration issues for new programs and policies.
The commission will be similar to the Boston Mayor's Office of New Bostonians.
Around a fourth of the city's 100,000 residents are foreign born.
Lowell is also home to the second largest Cambodian refugee population in the U.S., behind Long Beach, Calif.
Lynch would appoint nine members to the commission with four additional ex officio members.![]()
