WORCESTER, Mass.—The state is handing out nearly $450,000 in grants to preserve open space in Massachusetts.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced the conservation partnership grants for nine non-profit organizations while addressing the Massachusetts Land Conservation Conference in Worcester on Saturday.

Patrick says the money will help protect 235 acres of open space from the North Quabbin Hills to Cape Cod.

The largest grants of $85,000 went to The Coalition for Buzzards Bay to preserve 24 acres along Tripps Mill Brook in Mattapoisett (Ma-tah-POY'-sett), and to the Wareham Land Trust to protect 35 acres along Patterson's Brook.
