FRANKLIN, Mass.—Government and industry leaders are taking part in a public forum to determine how the state's Information Technology industry can help drive the state's economy.

Monday's event at EMC Corp. facilities in Franklin is hosted by state Sen. Karen Spilka, Senate chairwoman of the Joint Committee on Economic Development & Emerging Technologies, and seeks to highlight the importance of the IT industry to Massachusetts, now and in the future.

A recent study by the UMass Donohue Institute shows that the IT industry is the state's second largest employer with more than 178,000 workers.

The Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council is calling for the state and industry to create 100,000 new IT jobs in Massachusetts by the end of the decade.
