BOSTON—Farmers on the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket who were hurt by last summer's unusually cool and damp weather are now in line for federal disaster relief.
The island farmers join those in 11 other Massachusetts counties who were previously made eligible for low-interest federal loans and other assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Services Agency.
Wet and cool weather in May, June and July of last year wreaked havoc on many crops grown in Massachusetts, including tomatoes, corn, potatoes and tobacco.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray said many farmers need help as they recover from last year's losses and prepare for the growing season ahead.![]()
