BOSTON—Democrats Peter Smulowitz and Everett City Councilor Sal DiDomenico are declaring victory in a pair of primaries to fill to vacant Massachusetts Senate seats.

State Rep. Lida Harkins called Smulowitz Tuesday night to concede defeat.

Smulowitz will face off against Republican state Rep. Richard Ross of Wrentham to fill the seat left open when Republican Scott Brown won the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Edward Kennedy.

DiDomenico also declared victory in a six-way Democratic contest to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Anthony Galluccio.

But Cambridge attorney Timothy Flaherty isn't conceding after the vote showed DiDomenico with just over a 100-vote lead. Flaherty is calling for a re-count.

The Democratic winner is nearly certain to become the district's next senator because no Republicans are on the primary ballot.
