Tutu speaks at consecration of new bishop
Desmond Tutu yesterday urged the new bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut to emphasize that God embraces everyone. Tutu, a former head of the Anglican church in South Africa, spoke at Trinity College during the consecration of the Rev. Ian Douglas, who became the diocese’s 15th bishop. Douglas took over in February for Andrew Smith, former bishop who retired in January. Tutu listed various groups, including the rich and poor, the clever and not so clever, and charged Douglas with spreading the message that God accepts everyone. “We cannot choose our brothers and sisters,’’ Tutu said. “They are God’s gift to me and I am God’s gift to them.’’ (AP)Fewer Conn. businesses close in quarter
Connecticut state figures show that 3,000 businesses closed in the first quarter of 2010, but nearly 6,900 filed paperwork to incorporate. The figures released by the secretary of the state’s office show first-quarter closings were 17.4 percent lower than a year ago. State officials say that’s cause for cautious optimism that Connecticut’s business climate may be improving. Don Klepper-Smith, chairman of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers, says the state’s economic recovery is becoming “increasingly more tangible for both businesses and consumers.’’ (AP)PROVIDENCE

The chase began after State Police received a call about an SUV being driven erratically. At the same time, North Kingstown police noticed a Connecticut police advisory that a possibly armed man involved in a domestic dispute was seen driving an SUV in Rhode Island. Police say Stiggle, 39, wouldn’t pull over. He was arrested after his SUV crashed into a cruiser on Interstate 95 and flipped. No one was seriously hurt and no weapons were found. (AP)BURLINGTON, Vt.

Maclean started a minute behind 11-time champion Robert Lang, but passed Lang when he hit a rock and rolled his kayak about 4 miles into the race. Lang later hit another rock, allowing Maclean to lengthen his lead. Maclean finished the 16 1/2-mile race in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 5 seconds. In all, 889 paddlers in 479 canoes and kayaks entered the race, which was run under low water conditions and cloudy skies. (AP)© Copyright 2010 Globe Newspaper Company.
