MEDFORD, Mass.—A financially struggling Catholic school in Medford is closing after several years of declining enrollment.
Archdiocese of Boston officials say the St. Francis of Assisi School has accumulated a deficit of more than $150,000 in the past three years and will close at the end of this academic year.
Officials say the school needs at least 205 students to stay viable, but next year's projected enrollment is 135 students, a 50 percent decrease since 2005.
Current St. Francis of Assisi students will be able to enroll at either St. Joseph School in Medford or Cheverus School in Malden.
St. Francis serves children in kindergarten through the eighth-grade.
