MEDFORD, Mass.—A Tufts University alumni has committed to giving the school $30 million to support financial aid.

The university announced Monday that philanthropist Edward Merrin and his wife, Vivian, agreed to the gift after Merrin's 60th reunion this past weekend.

When the gift is received, the school will create the Merrin-Bacow Fellows Scholarship Fund in honor of Tufts President Lawrence Bacow.

Merrin is a former university trustee and founder of The Merrin Gallery in New York. He and his wife -- whose three sons graduated from Tufts -- are long-time benefactors whose past gifts in support of students and faculty total nearly $9 million.

Bacow said he was moved "beyond words" that the couple would make such a gift in his honor.
