BOSTON—Officials say the bill to repair the water main break that prompted a boil order for about two million greater Boston residents earlier this month is already at $600,000 and is expected to rise.

The federal government has so far refused to help with the cost.

Terrel Harris, a spokesman for the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, tells the Boston Herald that FEMA's rejection of the state's request for disaster relief has been appealed.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority has promised legal action against whoever is found responsible for the May 1 break, but so far has not identified a cause. The coupling that gave way has not been located.

MWRA Executive Director Fred Laskey says ratepayers will not see a rate hike to pay the bill.
