BRAINTREE, Mass.—A Catholic advocacy group has delivered a 5,000-signature petition to the Boston Archdiocese asking it not to discriminate in school admissions.
Catholics United, which calls itself a "social justice group," delivered the petition this week. It began the effort after St. Paul Elementary School in Hingham rescinded admission to a boy with lesbian parents.
School officials said the parents' relationship was in discord with church teachings and the 8-year-old would be confused by the school's conflicting views on family.
The archdiocese's head of schools has since offered to help the boy enroll in a different Catholic school.
Cardinal Sean O'Malley says Catholic schools don't exclude any groups, and the archdiocese has said it's writing a policy to clarify that.
