Ex-boyfriend charged after 2 are run down, assaulted in Lynn
LYNN — An East Boston man is expected to be arraigned today on attempted murder and related charges, after police said he ran over his former girlfriend and her new boyfriend on a busy city street.
Roberto Lopez, 33, is accused of using his car to run down Vilma Rosalez, 28, of East Boston and Edwin Pineda, 28, of Somerville as they crossed Union Street. After striking the pair, police said, he backed up and hit them again, before getting out of his car and attacking Rosalez, kicking her several times.
Lopez faces two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a car), and an additional count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shoes), said Lynn police Lieutenant William Sharpe.
Lopez is scheduled to be arraigned today in Lynn District Court.
The incident unfolded in front of Caruso’s Pizza Center about 10 a.m. A cook at the shop, who gave only his first name, John, said bystanders moved quickly to stop what he described as a brutal attack.
Witnesses, including several men standing outside a nearby barbershop, restrained Lopez before he could do more damage or flee, police said.
“The people on the street, they stopped him, and they held him; then they called 911,’’ said Jesus Nunez, 24, a barber at Guerrero Barbershop who said he saw what happened. “He tried to get back in his car, and a guy came over and held him down and said: ‘No, you’re not going anywhere. Look what you did. You’re going to jail.’ Then the police came.’’
Nunez said he was cutting a customer’s hair when he heard a crash. “It’s ugly; that’s what I think,’’ he said.
Sharpe said Rosalez sustained pelvic injuries. Pineda’s legs were injured.
Both victims were in stable condition with serious injuries last night at area hospitals, Sharpe said.
