PITTSFIELD, Mass.—A Pittsfield woman has been sentenced to two years in jail after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of her husband.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Charlene Martin was sentenced in Berkshire Superior Court on Thursday for the February 2009 death of 49-year-old Arthur Martin in their apartment.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that prosecutors originally charged her with murder, but a grand jury declined to indict her on that charge. She pleaded guilty to the lesser charge last month.

Charlene Martin told police that the stabbing was unintentional and the result of "joking around."

Authorities say Arthur Martin bled to death after the femoral artery in his upper left thigh was severed.
