CHATHAM, Mass.—State marine fishery officials say five to six great white sharks have been sighted off the shore in Chatham (CHA'-tum) and they are warning beach goers to use "extreme caution."

Division of Marine Fisheries director Paul Diodati said Tuesday in Boston that seals are swimming close to shore in that part of Cape Cod and they are likely attracting hungry sharks. Diodati said swimmers should stay away from the seals.

Officals have said it's unclear if the area is seeing more sharks or if there is just more attention to them.

Chatham officials are not closing any beaches but are telling swimmers to stay near shore.

The electronic devices were attached to five great whites last year and provided researchers with a wealth of information about the migratory habits of the sharks.
