BOSTON—An elderly woman has died after being found with deep bedsores from sitting for a month in a recliner soaked in her own waste.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Mary Araujo of Fall River died Thursday, her 81st birthday. She has been hospitalized in critical condition since Saturday, when a family member called 911. Police and paramedics found her in the recliner, in and out of consciousness.

Araujo's 49-year-old daughter, Karen Cabral, and her 51-year-old husband, Duarte Cabral, are charged with permitting injury to an elderly person and permitting serious injury to an elderly person. Three other family members also are charged. All five lived with Araujo. Prosecutors said there is no decision yet on upgrading the charges.

Karen Cabral's lawyer declined immediate comment Thursday.
