BEVERLY, Mass.—A Beverly middle school teacher who pleaded guilty to stabbing a man 22 years ago will return to the classroom this fall after state officials decided to let her keep her teaching license.

Elizabeth Spoon was sentenced to three years of probation after pleading guilty in May to assault and battery. Prosecutors say she stabbed a man fighting her then-boyfriend when she was 18.

She was arrested last year and suspended.

A spokesman for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education tells The Salem News the 40-year-old Spoon was allowed to keep her license last week because of her "sound moral character."

Her lawyer says Spoon has led an exemplary life since the stabbing. She also had the support of her superintendent, students and their parents.
