HAVERHILL, Mass.—Police say whoever broke into a Haverhill home earlier this week made off with some unusual items, including a 9-week-old pit bull puppy the owner said was worth $500.

Police say the thief or thieves who broke into the home Monday also took a six pack of beer and two pairs of sneakers worth about $200.

Police tell The Eagle-Tribune that the dog's owner is more concerned about the welfare of his pet than any financial loss.

The victim, Hector Quintana, told police he was away from his first-floor apartment for about three hours and discovered the burglary when he returned home about 10 p.m. Monday.

The dog was in a locked cage in his kitchen.

The break-in is still under investigation.
