New England in Brief
FALMOUTHA new federal ocean research vessel has joined the East Coast fleet and local scientists hope it will fill a big void. The 85-foot SRVx was docked in Woods Hole last week as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials showed off the boat, which is smaller, faster, and cheaper than what they had. The SRVx is big enough to go out to sea for several days at a time, and moves at 35 knots. But it consumes less fuel and needs a crew of about 12. One of the fleet’s bigger boats, the 165-foot vessel Nancy Foster, requires a crew of 20.
