A former University of Massachusetts Lowell graduate student was charged yesterday in US District Court with allegedly manufacturing and distributing the painkiller fentanyl, according to the US attorney’s office in Boston. UMass campus police arrested Roger O’Connor, 37, of Merrimack, N.H., on Sept. 17 after responding to complaints that he was running up and down a hallway at the school screaming, US Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz said. At the time of his arrest, police seized containers of white and brown powder, Ortiz said. O’Connor told campus police that the brown powder was fentanyl, which he, as a graduate student and teaching assistant studying chemistry, was making for his own use, according to Ortiz.
