BOSTON—Gov. Deval Patrick says Massachusetts will receive a $32.5 million federal grant to design plans to expand Boston's South Station.

The money will pay for the environmental permitting and design phase of the South Station expansion project, which includes constructing seven new tracks and expanding capacity from 13 to 20 tracks.

The upgrade will support a significant increase in Amtrak Acela Express High Speed Rail service to Boston along with planned Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail service expansion.
