A Lawrence man has been charged with shooting one of two brothers he believed had carjacked him. Police say Jose Cruz told them he was leaving a friend’s house Monday when two armed men demanded money. Police say that when Cruz told them he did not have any money, they took his car. Chief John Romero told The Eagle-Tribune that Cruz knew the men, went to their home, and shot one. Cruz was held without bail after pleading not guilty to charges including assault with intent to murder. Wilberto Gonzalez, who allegedly returned Cruz’s fire, was held on $100,000 bail on firearms and theft charges. His brother, Angel Gonzalez, is recovering after being hospitalized. He faces similar charges.
