BOSTON—The Raytheon Co. is laying off employees just days after Gov. Deval Patrick denied asking the company to delay terminations until after the state elections.

Raytheon's announcement Tuesday follows over 1,000 layoffs made by other Massachusetts employers since Patrick's Nov. 2 re-election.

His Republican opponent, Charles Baker, said Massachusetts isn't doing enough about job losses. Patrick noted the state unemployment rate is below the national average and that it's been recovering from the recession faster than some others.

The Associated Press asked Patrick three days before the election if he'd heard about pending layoffs at Raytheon. He said it was just a rumor.

He bristled when asked if he requested Raytheon delay any terminations, saying the company was adding jobs.

On Tuesday, the Raytheon spokesman denied that Patrick asked the company to delay any layoffs.
