BROCKTON, Mass.—It may be the season of giving, but the city of Brockton is looking to do some taking back this weekend.

On Sunday, it wants to reclaim its former Santa Claus hat-wearing record.

In 2008, Brockton set the mark for people wearing a Santa hat at one time in one place at 507. But Mullingar, Ireland, seized the record last year when it got 700 people to wear the hats.

Now, Signature Healthcare has given 10,000 red Santa hats to Brockton's public school students. On Sunday, residents will gather downtown to see if at least 701 of them show up with hats on.

The Santa Hat Challenge, run by the Greater Brockton Holiday Parade planning committee, is part of Brockton's efforts to celebrate its history as home of the first department store Santa, in 1890.
