Low-interest loans will be available to farmers in several Massachusetts and Rhode Island counties to help them recover from crop losses and other damage caused by last summer’s extreme heat. The Department of Agriculture designated Barnstable and Bristol counties in Massachusetts as natural disaster areas, making them eligible for loans from the department’s Farm Services Agency. Farmers in the contiguous counties of Dukes, Norfolk, and Plymouth in Massachusetts and Bristol, Newport, and Providence in Rhode Island are also eligible for the aid. The Small Business Administration announced yesterday that small businesses, agricultural cooperatives, and some nonprofit organizations in the five Massachusetts counties would also be eligible for up to $2 million in low-interest loans.
