Two brothers from Sunderland are facing attempted murder charges in a knife-wielding attack on the town’s police chief with a knife during an attempt to break a third brother out of the station lockup. Police say Stephen Jean-Babets, 22, was being held at the station on a traffic warrant in lieu of $270 bail. Police said his two older brothers, Kenneth Jean-Babets, 26, and Patrick Jean-Babets, 24, entered the station Monday armed with a knife and attacked Chief Jeffrey Gilbert. Both older brothers were subdued in the lobby by the chief and other officers using pepper spray. Gilbert was checked out at the hospital for minor injuries, but returned to work. All three brothers were scheduled to be arraigned yesterday.
