Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley has authorized Roman Catholic churches in the Boston archdiocese to collect donations to help the people of Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan and to the Catholic community there,’’ O’Malley said. “The challenges facing the government and people of Japan are extraordinary.’’
The special collections will be held either this weekend or the next, at the pastors’ discretion. The collections will be taken at Saturday afternoon Masses and all Masses on Sunday.
The money raised will be used to help provide both immediate and long-term assistance to the people of Japan, the archdiocese said.
