BOSTON—The US Navy has awarded a $247 million contract to General Electric Aircraft Engines in Lynn to build 68 new fighter jet engines.

Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said Wednesday that the engines are the most advanced in their class and are used to power Super Hornet jets.

The work on the engines is expected to be completed by April 2013, and will be performed in New Hampshire, Vermont, Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Indiana, North Carolina and Canada as well as Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Democrat said the contract to build the 68 engines translates into good jobs for Lynn and the state of the art equipment for the Navy.

The contract is unrelated to the debate over funding for an alternative engine for the F-35 fighter jet.
