Friends and colleagues are mourning the death of Cambridge financial planner James A. Henderson, who was killed Monday in a rockslide on the Greek island of Santorini.

Henderson, 52, of Wayland, was vacationing with his wife and college-age daughter when he died, his brother, John of Virginia, confirmed yesterday.

News of Henderson’s death began to spread through the Boston financial planning community Monday night, said Robert Reed, a partner at Framingham-based Northeastern Investment Advisors.

Reed, who worked with Henderson at Bank of America before leaving to start his own firm in 2006, called Henderson someone who “always did the right thing.’’

“I’ve always looked at Jim as the ultimate professional, and a very good person,’’ Reed said. “He was just one of those good guys who was very well liked by their clients.’’

Henderson was an associate resident director in the Cambridge office of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of our friend and colleague Jim Henderson,’’ Merril Pyes, managing director of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management at Boston Financial Center, said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this difficult time.’’

A message left with the US Embassy in Athens about the conditions of Henderson’s family members and the other victims was not immediately returned yesterday.

An Associated Press report about the rockslide said that a US tourist and his family were hiking in a tourist area near the port of Ola about 3 p.m. Monday afternoon when he was struck by the landslide. The report did not identify the Hendersons.

The man was killed. His wife and daughter and two other tourists were injured and taken to a hospital, the report said.

Funeral arrangements had not been finalized yesterday.
