NEW BEDFORD — The historic fishing schooner Ernestina is getting a detailed inspection to determine just how much it will cost to make it seaworthy again.
The 117-year-old vessel, moored in New Bedford, has been towed to a Fairhaven shipyard where it was hauled from the water. Its hull will be inspected, cleaned, and repainted.
A spokesman for the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees the ship, told The Standard-Times it will be a chance to evaluate what work is need to make it seaworthy and how much it will cost.
The schooner, a National Historic Landmark, is certified by the Coast Guard only as a moored attraction and cannot sail in its condition.
The Ernestina was built in Essex in 1894 as a Grand Banks schooner.
