A Salem man has been ordered held without bail on charges that he bit his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son hard enough to leave a mark because the child wouldn’t listen. Jose Rodriguez pleaded not guilty Friday in Salem District Court to assault and battery on a child. Prosecutors said the 24-year-old was arrested after the boy told an aunt and grandparents that he was playing with his toys when Rodriguez bit him, then told him he wouldn’t have done that if only he had listened to him. Defense lawyer Leslie Salter suggested that the injury could have been inflicted by another child at the day care center the boy attends. A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
