Some collectors hope to get their hands on a rare coin or priceless stamp.

John Bengel believes he may have hit the jackpot when he found a rare knitting catalog featuring photos of Scott Brown from 1984.

A self-described “good Republican’’ and “big Scott man’’ from suburban Pittsburgh, Bengel bought the catalogue for $100 on eBay and is selling it on Craigslist (and in the Globe classified section) for $250.

The 29-page catalog features 14 photos of Brown, at age 25, modeling L.L. Bean sweaters for Bernat, a company that sells yarn.

Bengel, a 65-year-old retired pharmacist, said he plans to raise the price on the catalogue by $100 every month until the 2012 Senate election.

“It’s an investment,’’ he said in an interview yesterday. “I don’t imagine there’s many in the whole United States. I sure can’t find any more, and I look every day on the Internet.’’

Brown modeled for the catalogue two years after posing for his more famous nude spread in Cosmopolitan magazine.

Bengel has three of those Cosmos, which he is selling for $350, $450, and $550, depending on their condition.

“I’m constantly trying to collect Scott Brown Cosmos because they’re going to go way up,’’ he said. ‘

‘It’s going to be a very big election up there.’’
