Officials are trying to determine whether the ground in the hometown of heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano can actually hold a statue of him. On Thursday, engineers tested the soil conditions at Marciano Stadium at Brockton High School, the planned site for a statue honoring Marciano. James Murphy, principal of Wheatstone Engineering & Consulting Inc. of Braintree, said so far the conditions look favorable for the soil to be able to hold the planned 20-foot-high statue and a concrete base. The World Boxing Council plans to gift the $250,000 bronze statue to the city. A Sept. 1, 2012, dedication is planned. (AP)
