Lawyers want terror case trial delayed

Lawyers for a Sudbury man charged with providing support to Al Qaeda are asking for a delay in his trial, saying they feel “sandbagged’’ by prosecutors. Tarek Mehannais accused in a 2010 indictment of conspiring to kill American troops in Iraq. His trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 3. During a court hearing yesterday, Mehannna’s lawyers said prosecutors have repeatedly promised to turn over evidence but have not done so in time for them to get ready for trial. Prosecutors responded that they have turned over large amounts of evidence, including, recently, older material in a more usable format. Judge George O’Toole scheduled another hearing for Sept. 15.
