The state Department of Transportation board yesterday approved a $145,000 salary for Frank DePaola, the state’s new highway administrator, nearly $20,000 more than predecessor Luisa Paiewonsky was paid. The salary matches what DePaola earned previously as an assistant general manager at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority; it also reflects an upward reclassification of the job on the state scale, to reflect added duties. The job now calls for a salary between $100,734 and $153,496; DePaola is a professional engineer who has worked for three decades in design and construction. Paiewonsky’s pay was pegged to an earlier grade.
