Federal prosecutors say more charges are possible against Greig
Federal prosecutors notified a judge in Boston today that they plan to bring additional charges against the girlfriend of reputed gangster James Whitey Bulger, but did not indicate what they will be.
Catherine Greig, 60, who was captured along with Bulger in Santa Monica, Calif., in June, is currently being held without bail on a single charge of conspiracy to harbor a fugitive for allegedly helping Bulger evade capture for more than 16 years.
In a status report on Greigs case filed in US District Court in Boston today, prosecutors wrote, The United States anticipates seeking a superseding indictment in the future.
Prosecutors also wrote that it was too early to determine whether the case would be resolved with a plea bargain, but if the case goes to trial, the government would need 15 days to present its evidence.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday on Greigs request for bail.
A spokeswoman for the US attorneys office would not comment on what charges prosecutors plan to bring against Greig.
The former dental hygienist, who grew up in South Boston, allegedly went on the run with Bulger shortly after he fled to evade a 1995 federal racketeering indictment. Bulger, who is charged in connection with 19 murders, is also being held without bail.
The couple had been living in a rent-controlled apartment in Santa Monica just a couple of blocks from the beach for at least 13 years, according to the FBI and the buildings property managers. The FBI found more than $800,000 cash and an arsenal of 30 weapons stashed behind holes that had been cut into the walls of the apartment and covered with pictures.![]()
