NEWTON, Mass.—Massachusetts State Police say they do not know whether a report of an abandoned baby in Newton was real or a cruel hoax.

The investigation remained open Sunday into the incident, which started when a Newton resident found a box Friday night in his recycling bin with a note asking the finder to care for a 4-month-old child.

The author identified herself as a 15-year-old girl named Bimini and said the baby girl's name was Sonny.

No baby was inside the box, though, and troopers who spent part of the weekend searching and digging through trash at an Avon recycling center found no sign of a baby.

Police say they are unaware of any reports of missing babies, but are treating it as a potentially legitimate abandonment until they can prove otherwise.
