WORCESTER, Mass.—A former Louvre museum administrator credited with revitalizing the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis will be the new director of the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts.

Matthias Waschek was named to the position Tuesday.

Museum trustees President Clifford Schorer III said Waschek was the unanimous choice of the search committee. He officially takes over Nov. 16.

The native of Germany has spent the past eight years as director of the St. Louis museum. Schorer said he brought the institution international attention and doubled its operating budget. Before that he was director of academic programs at the Louvre.

Schorer says Waschek is "a true force in the next generation of museum management."

He replaces Jim Welu, who announced last year that he would become director emeritus.
