LAWRENCE, Mass.—Authorities are looking for an inmate who apparently walked away from an Essex County jail facility.

A spokesman for the sheriff's department says 40-year-old Jose M. Morales of Salem was reported missing from the Correctional Alternative Center at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The facility is also known as "the farm."

Authorities tell The Eagle-Tribune (http://bit.ly/tLO0uU) that Morales is 5-foot-6 and weighs 180 pounds. He was serving a one-year sentence for disorderly conduct and defrauding an innkeeper in addition to an 18-month sentence for assault and battery on a public servant for kicking a court officer in Salem.

He was scheduled to be released in September 2012.

The farm is a minimum-security program where prisoners serving sentences for less serious offenses nearing the completion of their terms are housed.
