BOSTON—The Environmental Protection Agency is praising the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins and the New Jersey Devils for successful food recycling efforts.

The EPA said the NHL has been working to reduce the amount of cardboard, paper, plastics, glass and aluminum it sends to landfills. In addition, the Bruins have championed a program to donate prepared but unused food to the Boston Rescue Mission.

During the 2010-2011 season, the Bruins recovered and donated 3,796 meals to the mission. The New Jersey Devils recovered and donated approximately 7,346 meals.
