Lawrence awaits word from state on schools
In controversial move, mayor has sought a takeover
With a mix of relief, anger, and resignation, leaders in Lawrence are bracing for a potential state takeover of the city’s public schools, with many conceding that the radical step may be the only way to turn around the troubled system. “We definitely need the state to come in with a mandate for change,’’ Mayor William Lantigua said yesterday. “The status quo is not working, and we don’t need any more excuses about why the system cannot perform better.’’
