Former UNH president was immigrant
BEDFORD, N.H.—Bedford police are continuing to investigate the death of the first female president at the University of New Hampshire and only woman to hold that post at Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
Seventy-eight-year-old Evelyn Handler of Bow was walking across South River Road Friday night when she was struck by a car driven by 35-year-old Samuel Burke of New Boston. Police said no charges have been filed and the accident is still under investigation.
The Concord Monitor says Handler was born in Budapest in 1933 and immigrated to the United States in 1940. She served as the first female president at UNH from 1980-1983. She served as the fifth president to lead Brandeis from 1983-1991, the only woman to lead the university.
