Mass. state police commander urges crackdown
BOSTON—The commander of the Massachusetts State Police is promising closer scrutiny of troopers following several high-profile arrests in the past few months.
Col. Marian McGovern says she and other top officers have been meeting frequently recently in an effort to understand why so many troopers have been accused of breaking the law.
One trooper is facing federal charges for allegedly threatening to kill a bookie who owed him money. Another trooper is accused of fleeing from local police after soliciting a prostitute, and one possibly faces drunken driving charges after driving away from a traffic stop.
McGovern tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/yxU0x3) that within the next few weeks, the department expects to launch an electronic monitoring system that will automatically flag troopers who are showing consistent signs of poor behavior.
