BOSTON—The rate of homelessness among veterans in the state has dropped 21 percent over the past year, which is nearly twice the rate of reduction nationally.

That's according to the 2011 supplement of the Annual Homeless Assessment Report prepared by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Department of Veterans Services Secretary Coleman Nee and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs officials say the success stems in part from innovating programs, a committed network of service providers and Massachusetts's strong benefits system for veterans.

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray leads the Governor's Advisory Council on Veterans' Services and the Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness. He says the administration will continue to work with local, state and federal agencies to help people move to affordable and stable housing.
