Beverly Beckham birthday column touches reader
To Beverly Beckham:
While you are from the South Shore, I grew up and still live on the North Shore. You and I were both taught our religion by priests and nuns, had caring families, and now have abundant memories of many good people who touched our lives.
You have a grandchild with Down syndrome. I gave birth long ago to a daughter with Down syndrome who lived only eight all-too-short days, so I do enjoy reading about your Lucy and feel very proud and happy about the changing attitudes surrounding these amazing children.
Today brings another delightful coincidence. I celebrated my birthday on Friday and read in this morning’s Boston Sunday Globe that we have something else in common - our age! (“Turning 65, a not so random number,’’ Jan. 29)
Every word in your column rings so true. I also remember being 12 and thinking anyone over 40 was indeed very, very old. Sixty-five? Well, that was just ancient! Now I look at teens and do not want to see my reflection in their eyes! “Inside this worn-looking body,’’ I want to let them know, “is a young woman wondering how this aging thing happened so quickly!’’
So I take this early opportunity to wish you a birthday that is full of surprises as enjoyable as your talent for sharing stories. I also beg you not to take this remarkable birthday as a sign to retire. As you state, “celebrate,’’ and please continue to share your wonderful musings on daily life with your many fans.![]()
