SHREWSBURY, Mass.—Authorities say a 64-year-old retired state courts worker has died in a fire at a Shrewsbury duplex.

Fire Chief James Vuona says Paula Shumway was found in a bathroom with the door closed by firefighters who responded to the blaze at about 8 p.m. on Thursday.

The cause remains under investigation but Vuona tells the Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/xISfDX) that Shumway was a smoker who had breathing troubles and used an oxygen tank.

Capt. Mark Mann says the fire broke out in a bedroom and was fairly easy to control.

A couple in the adjoining unit was displaced because of smoke damage to their apartment.
