BOSTON—A Boston man police say was in a stolen vehicle that struck a state trooper working a road construction detail has pleaded not guilty to receiving a stolen car.

Brandon Smith was arraigned Friday in Dorchester District Court. A judge set bail at $2,500. Smith's lawyer said there's no proof he was in the car.

Police say the 25-year-old Smith was one of two occupants of Toyota Yaris that struck the trooper Thursday morning when officers tried to pull the vehicle over at the Neponset Street Bridge work site. It was later found abandoned.

The car had been reported stolen March 16 by a car rental company operating out of T.F. Green Airport in Rhode Island.

The trooper, 41-year-old Scott Flaherty, is recovering at home from a broken ankle and other injuries.
