The Board of Selectmen has approved increases in the town’s water and sewer rates for fiscal 2013, which begins July 1. The new rates will be reflected in the August billing. The selectmen earlier this month approved a water rate of $8.96 per 100 cubic feet for the upcoming fiscal year and a sewer rate of $9.80 for the same volume. Those rates compare with the $8.27 and $8.57 rates, respectively, that are currently charged. The rate hikes - an 8.3 percent increase in the water rate and a 14.3 percent increase in the sewer rate - are in part because of residents’ successful water conservation efforts. Overall, usage is down this fiscal year, resulting in a revenue shortfall.
