Mass. dioceses to ordain several into priesthood
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—The Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield has ordained six men into the priesthood in its largest ordination class in 29 years.
Bishop Timothy McDonnell led the ceremony Saturday at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield before a capacity congregation of more than 1,000 people.
During his homily, McDonnell said the priesthood has gone through "rough patches" recently, and some priests haven't lived up to their commitments. But he praised the six men for being willing to serve "in the midst of that suffering."
The six men include two converts from another faith, a former dairy farmer and a native of Poland.
Several miles east, Bishop Robert McManus of the Diocese of Worcester was to ordain four men at St. Paul's Cathedral. The four men included natives of Ghana and Columbia, and two men from Worcester County.
